Information from cousin Jennie Snyder says that John was raised by a Miller family because he was a stow away on the ship coming to America.

The 1880 Census said that there was a 4 month old grandson, Richard Kern, living there. Hannah was 17 and Phoebe was already married and gone.

Nelva M. Etling, 90, of Connellsville, passed away at her home Wednesday, Oct. 2, 2002. She was born April 7, 1912, in South Connellsville, a daughter of the late Jacob D. and Lucille Dahl Sanner. She was a loving wife, mother and grandmother and treasured her grandchildren. She was a lifelong resident of the Connellsville area. She did volunteer work for the Connellsville State General Hospital in the snack bar and was a member of the hospital auxiliary. She was a member of the Bullskin Township Seniors, the Order of Eastern Star #247 of Connellsville and was a member of the Otterbein United Methodist Church of Connellsville for more than 50 years. She is survived by her husband of 65 years, George W. Etling (they were married Sept. 6, 1937); a daughter, Nelva "Tootie" Hasson of Republic; three sons, Charles G. Etling and wife, Karen, of Connellsville, James A. Etling and wife, Gari, of Bountiful, Utah, and Leslie G. Etling and wife, Mary, of Connellsville; 12 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; a great-great-grandchild; several stepgreat-grandchildren; and a sister, M. "Deanie" Borden of Clermont, Fla. In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by three brothers, Leslie Sanner, Weldon "Bob" Sanner and Jess "Bud" Sanner; two half brothers, James Tressler and Roy Tressler; and a half sister, Goldie. He was born Oct. 20, 1909, in Connellsville, a son of the late Jacob N. and Lucille Dahl Sanner. He was a lifelong resident of Connellsville and prior to his retirement in 1974, he worked as a carman and wreck master for the B & O Railroad for 33 years. He was a member of the First Baptist Church in Connellsville, where he had served as a deacon of the church, a choir member, and as a Sunday School teacher. He is survived by his wife of 70 years, Gwendolyn F. Wiltrout Sanner; his sons Arlen R. Sanner and his wife, Nancy of Connellsville and Terry E. Sanner and his wife, Merry, of Greensburg; his grandchildren, Arla Huff and her husband Richard, Robert Sanner and his wife Diane, Timothy Sanner and his wife Beth, Lynda Prolenski and her husband, Duane, and Caerleigh Sanner; his great-grandchildren, Lori Basinger, Kelly Huff, Deanna Sanner, Robert Sanner, Jr., Jared Prolenski, Timothy Sanner, Jr., Heath Prolenski and Matthew Sanner; and a great-great-grandchild Ethan Mulhorn; two sisters Nelva Etling and her husband, George, of Connellsville and Deannie Borden and her husband, James, of Florida; and a brother, Jess "Bud" Sanner and his wife Ezzie, of Florida. Harold Wayde Mowry, 70, of Acme, died Tuesday, Dec. 31, 2002, in his home. He was born Dec. 22, 1932, in Davistown, a son of the late Samuel and Mildred Tinkey Mowry. Prior to retirement in 1988, Harold worked as an inspector for Westinghouse Corp. in East Pittsburgh. He was a veteran of the Korean War, having served in the U.S. Army from March 31, 1953, to March 21, 1955. He attained the rank of corporal. Harold was a member of Mt. Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church in Donegal. Harold is survived by his loving wife of 44 years, Goldie Kunkle Mowry, whom he married June 28, 1958, in Hagerstown, Md. Also surviving are his children, Kelley Pelzer and her husband, Robert, and their son, Luke, of Acme; Brian Mowry and his wife, Marianne, and their sons, Daniel and David, of Elgin, Texas; Diane Rulli and her husband, Ralph, and their children, Megan and Benjamin, of Enola, Pa., and Donna Cousino and her husband, the Rev. Darrell Cousino, and their son, Matthew, of Toledo, Ohio; his godson, Joseph Clark and his wife, Tami, and their children, Christian, Lauren and Victoria, of Coatesville; his brothers, Gerald Mowry and his wife, Evelyn, of Greensburg and Leon Mowry and his wife, Charlotte, of Acme; his sister, Nancy Zebley of Mt. He was born Dec. 15, 1949, in Normalville, a son of Wornie Levi Sanner of Normalville and the late Daisy E. "Doll" Grimm Sanner. Mahlon was a lifelong resident of Normalville and was a graduate of Connellsville High School in the Class of 1969. He worked as a welder and was a former employee of Fruehauf Corp. He was a veteran of the Vietnam War, having served in the U.S. Army and was a member of the Connellsville American Legion Post #301. He was also a member of the American Legion Riders Motorcycle Club. He was a member of the Clinton Church of God. In addition to his father, Mahlon is survived by his loving wife of 32 years, Bonnie J. Layman Sanner; a son, Christopher John Sanner at home; a brother, Lawrence Sanner and his wife, Norma of Normalville; six sisters, Dian Riggleman and husband, Jesse, of Romney, W.Va., Pauline Ohler and Elsie Shroyer, both of Normalville, Betty Sanner, Birdie Worley and Nancy Tissue and her husband, Greg, all of Connellsville; a nephew, Amos Hurt of Normalville, who was raised with Mahlon; and several other nephews and nieces. Mr. Sanner was born Jan. 13, 1959, in Connellsville, a son of Shirley Kent Stewart of Pennsylvania and the late Howard Stewart. He lived in the Liberty area for 10 years.
